The Science of Habit Change

 

If you're anything like me, you want to know more than does it work, you want to know HOW it works! With Hypnosis we engage the power of the mind.

It's simple, think of a lemon. Imagine rolling the lemon between your hands. Bring the lemon to your nose, and smell the bright yellow skin. Now imagine taking a knife, and cutting into the lemon, smell the lemon aroma. Now, holding it up to your mouth, imagine biting into the lemon, letting all the sour juice wash over your tongue. How does your body respond?

Our mind and body are directly linked. Did your mouth pucker? You weren't really eating a lemon, but your salivary glands responded. Just by thinking about doing something, we can have a physical reaction. The placebo effect is so real, that just by thinking we are taking something that will make us better (even if its only a sugar pill), we will start to get better. The placebo effect is so strong that it can account for up to 30% of a drug's efficacy in testing - that's why they developed double blind studies to counteract this effect.

Hypnosis is much more than placebo. Hypnosis helps the brain create new thoughts and feelings that support us in getting results. Then, the brain can make these new patterns automatic - turning them into habits!

We've all been programmed! Most of what we do every day is a habit. We have habits in what we do as well as habits in what we think and how we feel.

As kids, our brains were like sponges, soaking up everything in our envrionment as we learned who we are and how the world works. During this time, we picked up some useful habits, such as how to tie a shoe, and we also picked up some less useful habits. If your patterns are getting in the way of your goals, it's time to make a change. Hypnosis offers a powerful way to help "reprogram" your old thoughts and feelings about food and health, for new ones that make success easy!

Here's just an example of some of the ways we've been programmed for unhealthy habits:

  • You have to finish everything on your plate before your done
  • Sugary foods mean celebration: Look at all the holidays that we celebrate with food. In fact for some holidays, the food is the central part of the celebration.
  • Sugar foods mean reward or love.
  • Foods can represent a lot more than just nutrition or nourishment. It often represents love, comfort, indulgence, and more
  • Our food choices aren't just about the present moment, they are about all our past history. A hot fudge sunday isn't just frozen milk, sugar, and sauce, it's really connected with all the other times we've had a hot fudge sunday. Maybe it was when the family got together. Maybe it represents indulging ourselves, a treat, a pat on the back, an acknowldegement of a job well done?

When I grew up in Utah, we had sunny days 360 days of the year, and on rainy days, we would stay inside and make chocolate chip cookies. When I moved to the Northwest, I found myself making cookies constantly, and didn't know why, until I realized the cookie connection. It rains more days than not during the winter in the Northwest, if I were to have kept this habit, I would be huge by now.

Anything that we repeat over time is turned into a habit. This is how the brain works for efficiency. Some of our old habits and patterns can even be buried in the unconscious mind, they can be operating without our conscious awareness. We see the evidence of this through compulsions and cravings.

Now, it's easier than ever to change the old habits! This self-hypnosis set, will help you update your old habits, and create new thoughts and feelings about food, healthy choices, and your body! Have you ever tried to stay off sugar and found yourself with an uncontrollable urge for it? Or, perhaps you've felt depressed and wanted comfort, and so looked to a bag of candy or some other favorite treat?

Where do our cravings come from? One place they come from is our past food associations. If our mom used to make us cookies when we had a bad day at school, it makes sense that we might crave cookies as an adult when we've had a bad day. These are our food associations or food history. Food is much more than the present moment, its about our whole history connected with it.

Then, there can be underlying meanings and even beliefs that we picked up as a kid. One of my associates had the experience as a kid of being bullied by 5 older kids. When the event happend, he thought to himself, "If only I were bigger, they wouldn't pick on me." This is a belief. It's usually created by an event, and then how we interpret the situation becomes a driving force for an unconscious pattern or "program." For him, it created the unconscious program to be bigger so that other people couldn't push him around.

These deeper unconscious beliefs can be operating even though consciously we might know of all the health benefits of losing weight, all the positive reasons to do it, but if the deeper levels of our awareness are not aligned with our weight loss goals, we will continue to find ourselves struggling.

This hypnosis series uses all the tools to help the unconscious mind make updates and changes. We use imagery, metaphor, pictures, images, phrases, and new thoughts and feeling associations to update your internal programs, change your food associations. You'll simply find yourself making healthy choices, even preferring healthy foods, easily and naturally!

The brain is made up of neurons, nerve cells that connect to carry information throughout the brain. Our habits are the result of these pathways that fire together most often - creating a habit. When we have a new thought, when we learn a new habit, our brain creates new pathways by our nerve cells. Hypnosis works by creating new neuronal pathways or linking up new neurons in the brain through creating new associations. Because anything we repeat over time becomes habit, by simply listenting to a CD for a week, the brain exercises this new pathway, and it becomes our new habit.
